Connect objects and draw sketch lines

How to connect poles into a span versus drawing a multi-vertex Sketch Line in UtilityScout.

Written by Ryan Miller

Use this module when you need a line between objects, or a freehand line with several points. Connecting two poles into a span and drawing a Sketch Line are different modes. What you can connect, and which line types you see, come from your company's configuration.

Connect objects into a span

Use this when you are joining existing objects, most often two poles, into a span.

  1. Select the starting object.

  2. Choose Connect Objects or Add Connection.

  3. Follow Select an object to connect to and tap the other object.

  4. If your organization has more than one span type, use the span type control to pick the right one.

  5. Tap Confirm Connection to save the span.

The line is not saved until you confirm it.

If you need something at the middle of the span, use Add Midspan when it is offered. Measuring that midspan is a separate step. See Measure a midspan.

Cancel leaves the connection without saving it.

Draw a Sketch Line

A Sketch Line is not the same as connecting two poles. It is a multi-vertex polyline you draw point by point.

  1. Open the add type menu and choose Sketch Line.

  2. Add points with Add Vertex, or with Add Vertex at GPS when you want the point at your current position.

  3. Keep adding vertices until the line follows the path you need.

  4. Tap Finish Polyline to save it.

Cancel abandons the sketch without saving it.

If drawing a line tells you no line template is set up, that is a setup gap rather than a fault in this step. See "No line template configured" when I draw a line.

Which mode to use

  • Connect Objects / Add Connection when you are linking two objects into a span and will confirm with Confirm Connection.

  • Sketch Line when you need a free path with several bends, finished with Finish Polyline.

For placing poles and the shorter span overview, see Place a pole or span on the map.
