Measure a pole

Choose high accuracy with the stick or standard AR-only measurement, and start the one your job names.

Use this module only when your job requires pole measurement. What you see comes from your company's configuration, so steps and names may differ.


Which method to use

Your job names the method. Do not guess at the pole. If it does not name one, stop and ask the supervisor before you collect measurement data.

  • High accuracy, with the stick, when engineering needs the numbers within an inch.

  • Standard only when your job names Standard. Standard is AR-only and does not use the stick.

Important: If your job requires high accuracy and you cannot place the stick against the pole, stay in high accuracy. Use two known points, or skip tilt and still use the stick if the stick can touch the pole. Do not switch to Standard to get around the stick.

Starting the measurement

  1. Tap Measure Pole to start in the last mode you used on this configuration. A configuration with no saved choice starts in High accuracy.

  2. To pick the other mode, long-press Measure Pole, or use the chevron beside it. The menu offers High accuracy and Standard.

  3. Read the button label before you tap. You do not switch methods after the flow starts.

Note: A leftover Standard capture stays Standard until you change it.


Before you start

Tilt Zeroing and Calibrate Now are for standard measurement only, and high accuracy does not use that value.

Check that the app's target version setting matches the bracket on your stick, not the fiberglass stick itself. There are two designs and the app cannot tell which one you have. See the field shift runbook.

See Set up your accuracy stick for how to assemble it and place it against a pole. Targets face UP. Both target backs must sit flat and flush against the wood. Ignore printed segment markings on the stick.

Your steps come from your organization's configuration, so you may have more or fewer than the observed high-accuracy steps below, in a different order, with different names.

You start the measurement from the pole itself on the map. Tap Measure Pole.

Work the golden path first. Use the blocked-path section below only when you cannot complete a step the normal way.

  1. Assemble and place the stick. Mount Version 2 targets facing UP. Both target backs sit completely flat and flush against the wood pole. See Set up your accuracy stick.

  2. Capture tilt. Stand at the stick. Hold the phone flat against the top target. Double-click the pole base on screen. Both readings must agree within 0.5 degrees. This is only for camera perspective and lens distortion. It is not a check that the pole is plumb.

  3. Take the photo. Walk back 10 to 15 feet. Frame the whole pole, ground-line to true top. Standard 1x zoom is the default. 2x is also available. Crouch or angle upward in a tight alley. Avoid extreme angles. Look at the photo before you accept it. You can brighten it. Retake it if there is any doubt, because everything after this depends on the photo.

  4. Scale the targets. After you accept the photo, the app may find the stick target circles on its own. Check that the rings sit on both target centers. If it grabs the wrong thing, or risers block a target, look for Skip. If your capture offers Skip, use it and drag the rings onto the centers yourself. This is how the app learns how big things are in the photo. It is not the yellow top and bottom lines.

  5. Set the top and the bottom. Drag the yellow horizontal line to the exact physical top of the pole, and the bottom point to true ground. Snap controls help, and the height reads out as you go. You can hide the line to see the photo underneath.

  6. Fill the details and Finalize. Swipe up the gray details sheet. Fill the fields your job requires. Tap Finalize.

Important: The yellow line is a guide on the screen, not the pole. Pull it all the way to the true top. If you leave it short, the height can go to infinity. Hide line tucks the overlay while you set the top and the bottom.

If the pole bends or twists.

If the pole bends toward or away from you above the stick, shoot from the side.

If the capture offers left and right arrows, use them to match the lean you see.

A twist above the base is not a full 3D model of the pole. Place the stick across the worst twist, not along it.


When the golden path is blocked

Skip tilt

If dense brush or a fence blocks the base, and you cannot get the phone onto the pole, look for Skip tilt. The control may read Can't reach the base? Skip tilt. If your capture offers it, confirm Skip tilt.

Important: The app treats tilt as zero. That is slightly less accurate on a leaned pole. Use it only when you cannot capture tilt the normal way.

Skip tilt and still use the stick

Skip tilt does not force you to leave the stick behind.

If the stick can touch the pole but the targets cannot sit flush, skip tilt. That way a bad tilt is not stored.

If a two known points sheet opens, dismiss it. Swipe it down if that is how it appears on your phone. Then place the stick targets as usual. The targets still set the scale. Tilt stays at zero.

That path is not the same as finishing two known points. Use two known points only when you cannot use the stick targets.

Two known points

A link labeled No stick? Use two known points offers this method. Use it when you need high-accuracy results but cannot place the stick against the pole, for example a fenced enclosure, a highway, standing water, or no safe footing. Written steps:

  1. Tap No stick? Use two known points if that link is on screen.

  2. Enter two heights you actually know. Ground is often 0. The second height is often a rangefinder reading to a visible mark.

  3. Save.

  4. Tap those two spots on the photo.

  5. Put both points on the same side of the pole. A banner may remind you.

This method works from any distance the camera can reach.

Important: Only use heights you know from a tape, a rangefinder, or a marked reference. Wrong heights make every measurement on that pole wrong.

When you cannot see the base of the pole

Snow, grass, brush. There is a base offset for exactly this, and Cloneable's own instructions for it are worth following exactly:

On screen: "Use this when the pole base is hidden (snow, vegetation). First place the bottom line where you can see it, the snow line, top of the vegetation, or bottom of the stick. Then enter the distance from there down to the true ground, and the bottom line drops by that amount."

The offset adds to the measured height, so a two foot offset on a sixty five foot eight reading gives you sixty seven foot eight. That is correct, and that is the point. You tell the app how much pole is buried in what you cannot see.

After you apply the offset, you can edit or clear it. The app shows a caution so you remember it is in effect.


Finishing

Swipe up the gray details sheet if you have not already. Fill the required fields. Tap Finalize.

To check the measurement saved, watch the measured counter, not the pole's color. The pair of counters on the map shows how many objects your crew has measured, out of how many exist. A measurement that lands moves the left-hand number up by one. Your organization chooses its own map icons, so a pole's appearance may or may not change. The counter confirms the measurement, not that every other requirement on your job is complete. See Find your way around the map.

If the counter did not move, open the pole and check.


A habit worth having

Look at the height before you walk away. Compare it with the expected range on your job. A reading outside that range can indicate a scaling problem. Check while the pole and equipment are still in front of you. This is safer than checking after you leave.


One person or two

Your job still decides whether measurement applies. This section is only who does the work.

One person can complete a pole. Set the stand, fill the details, take the pole shot, then measure the midspan if your job asks for it.

Two people can split the work. One fills details. The other takes photos. Agree who shoots which photos before you start.
