Location sharing and privacy

The Field Efficiency view in the web portal (see the Analytics section) reconstructs each fielder's day from the times and places where work is record

Applies to: All customers.

The Field Efficiency view in the web portal (see Analytics and export operations) reconstructs each fielder's day from the times and places where work is recorded, which is how it can tell time spent on a pole from time spent traveling or on break. Because that view is built on location, crews reasonably ask whether the app is tracking them, and UtilityScout answers that question directly inside the app.

To find the answer, open Settings in UtilityScout (the person icon in the top corner of the map) and look under Privacy. There is a Location sharing notice that reflects the location policy your organization has set. It states whether location sharing is on or off, and when it is on, whether your location is shared only while UtilityScout is open (foreground only) or also in the background. When background sharing applies, the notice also lists the work-hours windows it covers.

This notice is read-only. It reflects what your organization configured; a fielder cannot change it from here, and the exact wording and any work-hours windows depend on that organization's policy. The notice describes only what it states, and it is not a statement about how long any data is kept. For your organization's specific location policy, check with your admin.

Set the policy (admin)

If you are an organization admin, you set this policy in the Cloneable web portal. Go to Settings, then Organization, and find the Field Location card. From there you can turn field location sharing on or off, turn on background location during work hours, and set the work-hours windows for each weekday (start and end times, with the option to add or remove windows). Choose Save to apply. Your fielders then see the read-only notice described above; they cannot change it themselves.

Important. Location tracking is privacy-sensitive. Turn on background tracking only within defined work hours, and make sure your field teams know the policy. Work hours are compared against each device's local clock.
